SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art and READ Books are pleased to announce the publication of The Banal. We would like to invite you to attend the book launch at READ Books on Friday April 11, 2008 at 7:00pm.

The Banal is a catalogue of three exhibitions curated by Cate Rimmer for the Liane and Danny Taran Gallery of the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts (now the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art) in Montréal. The Banal addresses interpretations of the mundane within contemporary art practice. The works in the three exhibitions, Think Big, The Weather and Pardon Me, privileged the quotidian while exploring the potential for shifts or transformations whereby the commonplace becomes extraordinary.

Artists in The Banal are: Fiona Banner, Omer Fast, Brian Jungen, Myfanwy MacLeod, Rita McBride, Rubén Otriz Torres, Kevin Schmidt, Jeremy Shaw, Kathy Slade, Volker Tiemann, David Crompton & Andrew Herfst, Edith Dekyndt, Trisha Donnelly, Antonia Hirsch, Tania Kitchell, Ana Rewakowicz, Lisa Robertson, Mina Totino, Andrew Dadson, Clément de Gauljac, Hadley + Maxwell, Jana Leo, Mathew Sawyer, Ron Tran, and Shizuka Yokomizo.

Cate Rimmer is a Vancouver-based curator, writer, and critic. She is recognized for bringing leading international artists such as Fiona Banner, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Gerard Byrne, Matthew Buckingham, and Gregory Crewdson, to exhibit at the Charles H. Scott Gallery. Rimmer was the director of Truck Gallery in Calgary and was the founding director / curator of Vancouver’s Artspeak Gallery.
