Rock and Roll Work Bench

Neil Wedman

READ Books is pleased to present Rock and Roll Work Bench, a new print edition by Neil Wedman. The image for Work Bench is sourced from an actual tabletop that had been in use in a shop class in an East Vancouver high school. Accumulated layers of carved marks made by the students cover the tabletop and bear the trace of decades of teen boredom and rebellion. While Wedman is principally known as a painter, he also produces photographic installations and film and video works. He is a past recipient of the VIVA Award and is represented by the Equinox Gallery in Vancouver. Wedman will have a solo exhibition at the Charles H. Scott Gallery in 2013.

Elspeth Pratt

Edited by Kathy Slade

Published by ECU Press, Charles H. Scott Gallery, and Cooley Gallery

This is the first monograph published on the work of Canadian artist Elspeth Pratt that spans her career to date. For twenty-eight years Pratt has been producing sculptural work that negotiates the line between abstraction and representation to explore architecture and public space. Working with everyday "impoverished" materials, the artist engages with ideas of doubt, the precarious, and the built environment. The monograph includes texts by Lorna Brown, Lisa Robertson, Bitter / Webber, Matthew Stadler, Oliver Neumann, and Stephanie Snyder.

Since 1996, Catriona Jeffries has commissioned writers to respond to the exhibitions at her gallery through critical essays produced as small booklets by CJ Press. In 2006 the first volume of essays was gathered together for publication as hardcover book and with the launch of the gallery's new website, past essays are now available online.  This new volume includes contributions by Eric Bell, Charo Neville, Samir Gandesha, Anne Low, Monika Szewczyk, Luanne Martineau, Reid Shier, Sharla Sava, Fiona Jeffries, Ian Wallace and Myfanwy MacLeod.
