Please join READ Books for the launch of the Amazing Rotary Psycho-Opticon™, a new print edition by Rodney Graham for the ECU Press.


The Amazing Rotary Psycho-Opticon™ is extrapolated from the design of a rotating mechanical backdrop for a 1970 appearance of Black Sabbath on a Belgian television program. In 2008 Graham worked with Toby’s Cycle Works Inc. to adapt this optical apparatus into the Rotary Psycho-Opticon, a pedal driven unit conceived for exercise, entertainment and self-hypnosis. The artist also designed a larger version of the sculpture which was used as a backdrop for performances by the Rodney Graham Band in New York and Glasgow. The edition consists of 125 unique prints displaying the "Opticon" discs rotated into five different positions and each of these five positions is available in twenty-five different colour combinations.


Vancouver artist Rodney Graham is known for literary and conceptual artworks, cinematic installations, costume dramas, and also as a singer-songwriter. He has exhibited internationally and most recently has had solo exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Museu Picasso (Barcelona), Museum of Contemporary Art (Barcelona), Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg), Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Basel).
