About
Libby Leshgold Gallery is a public art gallery dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art. Located within Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver Canada, the Gallery serves a broad and varied community that includes the students, faculty and staff of the University, the arts community, the public of Greater Vancouver, and visitors from around the world.
mandate
Libby Leshgold Gallery is a space of experimentation, cultural production and public engagement. Situated within the context of an art and design university, we uplift learning and research in an expanded field of presentation.
Working through interdisciplinary exhibitions, collaboration and gathering, artist-led publishing, mentorship and residencies, we prioritize artists’ ideas and the issues that are important to them.
Exhibitions and public programs
Libby Leshgold Gallery presents a year-round program of exhibitions, performances and events, providing a platform for artists working across disciplines. Supporting artists from the emergent to the internationally recognized, gallery presentations are adapted to suit the needs and nature of the practice itself and the ideas and communities surrounding it.
Embracing the gallery as a forum for active research and learning, Libby Leshgold Gallery produces a range of talks, panels, lectures, and educational opportunities, including a bi-annual thematic summer institute, select visiting artist-led workshops and collaborative and publicly accessible course offerings.
history
Previously the Charles H. Scott Gallery, named for the first principal of the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University of Art + Design), we became Libby Leshgold Gallery in the Fall of 2017 with our move to the Great Northern Way Campus. The Gallery was opened in 1980 when the University relocated to its previous location on Granville Island.
Since its inception, Libby Leshgold Gallery has operated as a public gallery with professional museum standards. It has made a significant contribution to the presentation and analysis of contemporary art in Canada. As well, throughout its history the Gallery has functioned as a teaching gallery where students can learn professional curatorial and exhibition practices.
