Cai Guo-Qiang
Curated by Greg Bellerby
Charles H. Scott Gallery is pleased to present the work of internationally renowned artist Cai Guo-Qiang.
A student of Chinese philosophy, medicine, geography and history, Cai Guo-Qiang applies traditional Chinese symbols and materials to a contemporary Western context. He is best known for his work with gunpowder. These works include spectacular indoor gunpowder drawings as well as large-scale outdoor explosions such as Extending the Great Wall (China), The Earth Has It’s Black Hole Too (Hiroshima, Japan) and Dragon Sight Sees Vienna (Austria).
Cai Guo-Qiang will produce two new projects for his exhibition at Charles H. Scott Gallery. He will present a series of paintings depicting past public explosions and a large gunpowder drawing of Fountain, an explosion project done in the Netherlands in 1999. He will make the drawing at the opening on August 2.
Cai Guo-Qiang is being brought to Vancouver by Greg Bellerby of Charles H. Scott Gallery and Keith Wallace of the Contemporary Art Gallery. Cai will have a concurrent exhibition at the CAG entitled Performing Chinese Ink Paintings which will involve a public performance work at the Sun Yat-Sen Gardens on July 24th, 25th and 26th followed by an installation at the CAG, July 28 to September 22.
