Libby Leshgold Gallery

To mark the beginning of an online residency by artist-run publisher and archive Wendy's Subway (Brooklyn, NY) the Libby Leshgold Gallery and READ Books (Vancouver, BC) are pleased to present online talks by artist-publishers Beatrix Pang (Hong Kong) and Paul Soulellis (Providence, RI), followed by a Q & A, on Thursday, July 30, beginning at 4pm Pacific time.

The complicated convergence of the pandemic and public health measures with advancing authoritarianism worldwide and with the increasingly urgent and expanding movements against racism, colonialism, environmental devastation, and other threats to dignity and survival have combined to create an emergency situation that is unique within many people's lived experience. Artist-publishers and their networks are capable of thoughtful and strategic responses to these crisis conditions and to the needs of social movements. These two artist-publishers will speak about their work in the context of this moment.

During their residency, Wendy’s Subway will address the question of artists’ networks in an expanded view, looking specifically at contemporary publishing networks formed and solidified throughout the current overlapping crises in public health and civil society. The project will ask the question of how publishing networks can strengthen and inform local and international social justice movements, mutual aid efforts, solidarity and coalition-building, emergency response, and antiracist advocacy. The residency will conclude in October 2020.

This residency is part of the Libby Leshgold Gallery and READ Books's annual Summer School for Artists' Publishing, which hosts residencies, presents exhibitions, and organizes symposia and talks seeking to advance international critical discourse and self-examination in the field of artists' publishing.
