The Charles H. Scott Gallery is pleased to present the work of renowned Vancouver artist Eric Metcalfe in his first solo exhibition in Vancouver since 1992. His latest work, The Attic Project, is an installation consisting of hand-painted vessels inspired by pottery of the Athenian period, gouache drawings, large-scale wall drawings and a mural painted in situ. Using a variation on his signature camouflage spots, the installation sets up a dialogue between the object as art and the object as functional receptacle, while transforming the gallery into a junction between the ancient and the modern.

Biographies

In addition to exhibiting throughout Canada, Eric Metcalfe has shown in New York, Tokyo, Germany (Documenta 8), England, France and Australia. He has been working since the sixties and has made significant and innovative contributions to the visual arts in Vancouver. He co-founded the Western Front in 1973. It quickly became an internationally respected artist run centre, known for conceptual art, performance and video with strong intellectual ties to the Fluxus movement. Metcalfe works in a variety of media including performance, video, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. He has received numerous awards throughout his career including: a Governor-General’s Citation and Medal, the VIVA Special Donor Award and the Canada Council for the Arts Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for special achievements and excellence in the visual arts.
