Vertical Cities: Documenting Hong Kong and Vancouver, An Exhibition of Photographs

Jim Breukelman, Christos Dikeakos, Karin Geiger, Arni Haraldsson, So Hing Keung, Bobby Sham, Reid Shier, Gretchen So, Wong Kan Tai, Tse Chi Tak

Curated by Greg Bellerby

July 21–August 22, 1999

Vertical Cities brings together five photographers from Vancouver and five photographers from Hong Kong who’s work has focused on the changing architectural and social environments of these two cities. Over the past twenty-five years the relationship between Vancouver and Hong Kong has been increasingly linked. The development of Vancouver economically, physically and culturally has been shaped by the Hong Kong Chinese who immigrated and invested during the 1980’s and 90’s. Sale of the Expo lands to Hong Kong developer and the construction of Concord Pacific has forever altered the urban landscape of Vancouver. At the same time Hong Kong has also undergone a massive reconstruction that has transformed the city. Both cities have benefited and suffered as a result of this rapid growth. The exhibition will present the work of Arni Haraldsson, Christos Dikeakos, Jim Breukelman, Reid Shier and Karen Geiger from Vancouver and Bobby Sham, So Hing Keung, Gretchen So, Wong Kan Tai and Tse Chi Tak from Hong Kong.
