Reflector is a series of publications representing artists’, curators’, writers’, and cultural workers’ responses to aspects of the current moment. Each volume contains one response from one contributor. Each volume contains one idea or subject, explored in one essay. In the case of Reflector, the content may be a critical essay, autobiographical writing, series of images, or other means of elaborating an idea in print.
The series is a response to the circumstances of the present moment. The pandemic, accompanied by rising authoritarianism and environmental degradation, accentuates the insufficiency of the art system and the wider systems of our world to mitigate or address colonialism, racism, global heating, economic inequality, gender discrimination, and the violence and oppression that accompanies these evils. While we encourage engagement with social justice ideas, we are also mindful that “reflection” includes the personal, the sublime, and the absurd.
